What counts as a plumbing emergency?

Anything that gets worse while you wait. A drip can hold until tomorrow; a split pipe cannot.

  • A burst pipe or a flexi hose that has let go under a sink or behind a toilet
  • Sewer water backing up into showers, gully traps or floor wastes
  • Stormwater pouring into a garage, laundry or subfloor
  • A hot water unit leaking, hissing or flooding
  • Gas, which never waits: if you can smell gas, leave the house, avoid switches and ring the gas network's emergency line first, then us for the repair

Can wait until morning: a dripping tap, a single slow drain with no other symptoms, or a unit that has stopped heating without leaking. Ring anyway if you are unsure, because describing the fault costs nothing.

A burst pipe, minute by minute

The first five minutes decide how big this job gets. Water runs downhill fast on this suburb's ridge-and-gully blocks, and a split line at the top of a steep yard can flood a lower neighbour's before you notice your own.

  1. 01

Shut the water at the meter

The tap sits at the meter box, usually near the front boundary. Wind it clockwise as far as it goes.

  2. 02

Close the valve on the hot water system when the water coming out is warm, so the tank cannot empty or run dry.

  3. 03

Open the lowest tap on the property to drain what is left in the pipes away from carpets and cabinetry.

  4. 04

Move what you can out of the wet, then ring (02) 4093 0558.

If the meter tap is stuck or buried, ring while the water is still running and say so. Replacement flexi hoses and fittings travel on the truck, so a burst can be repaired at the visit rather than capped off and left.

How an emergency visit unfolds

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4093 0558 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    The fix on the spot

The plumber isolates the leak, clears the line or swaps the failed part there and then, using the gear carried on the truck.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

Where a drain caused the flood, the camera goes in after the clear, so you know whether the pipe itself is damaged.

What are you actually paying for after hours?

An after-hours rate applies to visits outside business hours, and it is named at booking before anyone leaves.

  • The hour A 3am visit costs more than a 10am one, and the rate is always named up front.
  • Where the break is A split pipe in the subfloor of a sloping block means crawling in; a failed hose beneath a basin does not.
  • Parts A standard flexi hose swap is a small job; a split galvanised line inside a wall is not.
  • The drain's condition A sewer backup cleared at night may need a camera pass and a repair quote once the danger has passed.

Night faults on the Cambridge Hills ridge

The hoses go without warning

The brick-veneer homes of the Cambridge Hills Estate era carry braided connector hoses beneath sinks and behind cisterns, and those hoses age out and split with no warning drip. One that lets go while the house is asleep floods a floor by morning, which is why a suspected burst is the first job of the night.

Storms test the lower blocks

Area figures put average annual rainfall at 1128 millimetres, much of it in heavy falls. That water rolls off the ridge and surges into the properties sitting in the gullies, fast enough to count as an emergency. For lines that overflow in every big wet, the longer-term fix is set out under stormwater drains.

Hot water units fail at night

Homes from the estate's first building wave in the 1970s and 1980s are working through hot water replacements, and an old tank can give out at any hour. When one dies, the hot water hub weighs up repair versus replacement, and a temporary tank can be set up if the new unit takes time to arrive.

Water in the street

Water gushing out of the footpath or nature strip comes from the supply side of your meter, and that pipe is Hunter Water's to fix. Report it to them first.

Wet wiring

Where floodwater has touched an outlet or the meter box, stay clear of it and have an electrician test the circuits before anyone switches anything back on.

The rest of the trade, one click away

Emergencies are one part of the work. The blocked drains hub covers clearing and camera checks in full, the hot water hub owns repairs versus replacement, and the gas leak page handles gas faults once the network has made the site safe. For slow leaks that hide rather than announce themselves, the water leak detection page is the right start.

Questions people ask at 2am

Should I turn the water off before ringing about a burst pipe?

Yes. Close the main valve at the water meter, then ring, because on a sloping block water from a split line heads straight for the lower rooms. If the tap is seized or you cannot find it, ring anyway and describe what you can see.

Do you come out to Rankin Park on weekends and public holidays?

We do. Someone answers the phone at any hour, and visits outside business hours are charged at the after-hours rate. You hear that rate when you book, before anyone is sent out, and the price itself is fixed and agreed before work starts.

My hot water died overnight. Is that an emergency or can it wait?

It can wait until morning if no water is leaking. The hot water hub sets out whether a repair or a full swap makes sense for an ageing unit. If it is leaking or has flooded, turn off its isolating tap and ring.

A storm has filled my gully trap and it is overflowing. What should I do first?

Keep everyone away from the overflow, move stored items clear and ring. Big Hunter storms shed water off the ridge fast, and the properties sitting lowest cop overflow at the gully trap when the line cannot keep up. We bring the jetter and camera to find where the run is struggling.
